Tips & Tidbits
Decluttering can be an overwhelming process, so tackle it one pile at a time! start with one drawer, one closet, or one shelf and then move on to the next.
* Throw away any broken items, items you have not fixed, stained clothing, and containers that don't have their matching lids.
* Recycle, if possible, old magazines, newspapers, cardboard boxes, and plastic containers.
* Donate any decent clothing that is too big or too small, and household items in working condition that you have not used in the PAST YEAR.
* Designate a home for those items you choose to keep.
* If you get more magazines that you can realistically read, choose only a few and cancel subscriptions to the rest.
* Open your mail over a trash can (and/or shredder) and get rid of all junk mail and those items you do not immediately need.
* Keep "like items with like" and store them where you use them.
* Make out-of-the-way storage easy to get to: don't block pathways, stairs, or closet doors.
* Utilize the space that is typically ignored (e.g. get bookshelves in rooms with blank walls, stack containers or put shelves under staircase, etc.)
* Have some items do double duty, or use furniture for different purposes, (e.g. an ottoman with a hinged lid to store bankets or games, and antique trunk as a coffee table.
